PostSubject: Hiya    Hiya EmptySun 22 Aug 2010, 5:38 pm

Hi, I'm Luna, I'm 26 and live in England. I'm bilingual in German and English and have a very exciting office job.... not. Razz

I found this place courtesy of Marieke. Sadly, while I did sign up for WriteOnCon, I was double booked so didn't really get the chance to post or read much.

My genre is YA paranormal, I'm currently at the revision stages of my first story attempt in 5 years. My very first story got politely turned down when I was 20, which reading back on it now was probably a good thing.

Apart from my current WIP (working title: Sakura), I have two others in the planning stages – but I'm not allowed to touch them until after Sakura is finished... it's hard to resist!

My crit-ing experience is basically anything Marieke sends me. Which most recently was Paladin. I got to watch read it evolve from beginning to end. I'm also looking forward to starting on Ysolde.

Technical crit, like spelling and grammar is not my forte. When I worked through Paladin my focus was story, character development and impressions.

I think that's everything.... Smile

Yaaaaaaay, you're here! I convinced you!!! Alien! pirat

And of course I'm biased in saying this, but that doesn't make it any less true - Luna's an excellent critique partner when it comes to story or characters! ^_^

Hi Luna! I'm not a technical crit partner either. I'm not sure enough in my grammar and spelling to tell someone they did it wrong. If they say it is right, I'm going to believe them;-) Lol!

I hear that so many times! Book of Black is my first full-length novel. I hope I won't have to look back and see it still sitting in my drawer a long time from now - I've spent years on it. Okay, so not years, but at least a year, although I wrote the first draft in the summer of 2008. God, has it changed since then.

Anyway, we have a great group here already. Everyone's sort of getting to know each other, so there hasn't been much activity in the critique section yet. I bet everyone's really busy, too. I'm trying to cram as much writing into the short time I have left before uni starts. I'll have less time to write after that, which means I'll probably spend more time blogging and in forums Razz

All you can do, is write the best book you can. The best first, the best second, the best whatever. Write the best book you can. And go from there.

If it doesn't end up in a drawer, that would be AMAZING.

If it does... Well then you pick up your pen and start writing your second story. Just write. In the end, isn't that what we all do best?
I once talked to Lynn Flewelling about it, and she told me about interviewing Stephen King, asking him about writing and if it was fun:
"Every new project is a leap of faith: you can't predict whether it will be good, or if anyone will like it, or what art the publisher will put on the cover. For all but a blessed few, the pay isn't astronomical, either. But you can't think too much about such things. They'll only slow you down, or stop you. You have to boldly meet that blank page (or in my case, blank Word document) each day and trust your instincts to fill it up with wonders."

It is so true.
And you can always go back and revise, revise, revise Very Happy

ETA: Slightly off-topic, but trying to find that piece of advice I came across a few more from writers we (friends and me) met or emailed over the years. (This from forever ago and in my fantasy days, but I tried to find the ones that were truths universally acknowledged Wink ) I thought they might be of interest too.

"Keep writing - do something every day. A journal provides excellent practice. Writing regularly is good discipline, and believe me, earning a living as a writer requires self-discipline of the highest order. Be prepared to work hard and to provide your own motivation. Learn from knock-backs. Don't expect everything to happen at once." Juliet Marillier

"It's very hard to give advice on writing, because the best way to learn is through doing. No two writers work in the same manner, and each of you will have to find your own path. So… write. Write a lot. Let yourself have fun. Build a world and explore it. Create characters, break their hearts and mend them. Take risks, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. It's okay -- that's how you learn." Jacqueline Carey

"Persevere." Robin Hobb

"There are enough tomes of writerly opinion out there to build a tower to the moon, but you can't learn to write using someone else's method. Even if you could, you would then sound like someone else, and there is no point to that. You have to find your own unique voice and speak with it." Elizabeth Haydon

"Good advice for all writers—relax.
Tell your own stories and don’t try to be somebody else.
Write about what you love—and write about what scares you. If you’re honest, you’ll write a good story!" Greg Bear

"Every good writer I know, no matter how much experience they have, is still learning how to write. We can all still improve. Be honest with yourself, as much as you are able to, about your weaknesses and strengths. Keep learning." Kate Elliott

"Write about things you love to think about, but remember that the writing itself will sometimes hurt...because it calls on deep emotions, or because getting it right can feel so hard that it hurts your brain. Dealing with that is all part of the satisfaction. Go deep into yourself. Your writing will be better for it.
Love your craft. Never stop learning more about it. Never stop reading. Always seek out feedback." Russell Blackford

I am so sorry it took so long to reply, Luna, but there were quite a few technical difficulties this past weekend.

All the same, I'm glad to see you here! I hope you enjoy yourself and gain something from your time with The Voice.

Thanks for all the lovely welcomes, sorry I wasn't around yesterday. Was hiding in the dark yesterday with a migraine, very inconvenient when you have revisions in your head and you can't look at a screen to put them into action Sad

I should really have added that I vanish from the online world randomly for weeks as a time, especially when work starts annoying me. Rolling Eyes
